A tee sign is the only piece of documentation most players will ever read about a hole, and they read it with a disc in their hand and a group waiting. It has to answer three questions in the order they get asked: what hole is this, how far is it, and what is out of bounds. Everything else is decoration.
The first generation, in 2021, was built for a course that had just gained multiple layouts. Every hole needed a sign per layout, which meant 72 signs that had to agree with each other and be cheap to regenerate when a pin moved. So they were strips: club mark, hole, distance, par, and a colored band naming the layout, in a Canva file where changing a number was the whole job. Not beautiful, but consistent, and a volunteer could reprint a layout without me.
The current signs are the ones the course deserved. Each carries the Monster at Majette mark, both distances, the out-of-bounds rule in words, and a top-down fairway map with water, OB lines, mandatories, and the walk to the next tee. That map art is also what the course app shows on each hole page, cropped from the same source, so the sign on the tee and the screen in a player’s hand agree.
